My five year old daughter doesn’t read yet. She recognizes a handful of words, Mom, Dad, her name, her sister’s name, and Oz. She’s crazy about the Oz books, which we’re still reading each night at bedtime. She often looks over my shoulder when I’m online, and she has noticed ads for Oz the Great and Powerful. Of course she read the word “Oz”, and instantly became interested, or should I say obsessed She’s been asking me about the film, incessantly. I’m eager to go see it for my own reasons, but I also want to see it to prescreen and decide if it’s suitable for a five year old. Just based on the clips I’ve seen and the PG rating, I’m guessing the answer is no. Besides, my daughter has yet to make it to the end of the 1939 musical version of Oz. If she thinks that’s too scary I can’t see her enjoying this one.
I read a great pre-screening review that said all of her kids, even the three year old, enjoyed the film. And I thought, wait, did you just say you took your three year old?! I guess it depends on the child, but I have serious reservations on whether or not to let my five year old see this, or any, PG-rated movie.
What age would you think this film would be appropriate for? Are you planning on taking your kids to go see Oz?
