I was sitting eating lunch with my Rainbow, who will be four next week, when she said, “Mom, can I ask you something? If today’s Canada’s Birthday does the world get a present?”
I’m always curious to see what my girl is thinking, so I asked her what sort of present she thought the world would like.
“What about a cake?”
“No, because the world has no mouth!”
“What about if we all sang a song?”
“No, because the world has no ears!”
After munching and thinking about it for a bit she told me, “I’m thinking, I don’t want to give a present to the whole world… just to Canada, ’cause it’s her birthday.”
“Well, what about fireworks?”
“No, because Canada has no eyes!”
“Well, what do you think would be a good gift, Rainbow?”
“I don’t know.”
“Me neither.”
We both had a long quiet thought while finishing up our lunch, and then Rainbow said “Once in a TV show I saw a girl dancing with trees, and those trees had no ears, or eyes, or mouth, but she danced with them anyways. I think that’s what we should give Canada! We’ll dance for her! If we go outside and dance in the grass she’ll feel out feet dancing thumping around and know it’s for her birthday…. If I have a good sleep can we do that after naptime?”
“Sure thing kid.”
And that’s just what we did…
