Best Attractions in Mexico

September 22, 2015 by Deanna Tousignant Leave a Comment

Mexico remains a favourite holiday destination, attracting millions of visitors each year. With endless beaches, spectacular natural wonders and luxury resorts, it’s not hard to see why. For some inspiration on your next Mexican adventure, here’s some of the best attractions worth visiting.

Chichen Itza

The ruins of this ancient city have long been a tourist hot spot, as visitors try to understand this glimpse into a forgotten world. It can be found in the Yucatan Peninsula, 125 km west of Cancun. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you can marvel at temples, intricate stone pillars and an observatory tower. The star of the show is the iconic pyramid, El Castillo with exactly 365 steps. Creating the modern day calendar was just one of many achievements that we can thank the Mayans for. If you want to avoid the crowds and midday heat, be sure to visit early in the morning.

Xcaret

For a great day out that the whole family will enjoy, head to this eco archaeological park in the Riviera Maya. It’s a celebration of the country’s rich heritage with traditional Mayan performances and more than forty attractions. You can take hiking trails into the dense jungle, explore hidden caves or cool down in one of the underground rives. There is also an impressive aquarium and Mexican Folk Art Museum. After all that excitement, you can unwind at one of two beaches or swim with dolphins.

Arch of Cabo San Lucas

If you’re an aspiring photographer or just want that perfect holiday snap, it’s worth visiting this natural wonder. Known as El Arco, this dramatic rock formation rises from crystal waters with waves crashing at its base. It’s accessible via boat which can easily be hired at Cabo San Lucas Marina. Be sure to look out for sea lions which are common in the area.

Isla Contoy

This uninhabited island is easily reachable on a day trip departing from Cancun. Only a fortunate 200 visitors are allowed to visit this castaway paradise per day. You can explore one of the walking trails and marvel at the many bird species from red flamingos to brown pelicans. At a visitors center, you can learn more about this national park and climb an observation tower for spectacular views.

Cancun Underwater Museum

This eco project has become the world’s most famous underwater sculpture museum. Visitors can take a scuba diving tour of this artificial reef which holds over 470 concrete statues. It’s been widely praised for its conservation efforts and improvement to the region’s diverse eco system. Aside from the human statues, you can marvel at a life sized VW beetle and a small house.

There’s so many other attractions to enjoy on your next holiday to Mexico. Take a break from the beach and explore everything this country has to offer.
