Life Choices Foods is an all Canadian company that offers an impressive line up of all natural, healthy, “convenience” foods. They make everything from all beef hot dogs to mini pizzas and fish sticks, and all of their products contain only premium organic and natural ingredients. They make great tasting food, that can help contribute to a balanced diet, fitting in with their motto: “Making the Right Choices Easy”.
I will tell you one choice which was not easy for me. I had a terrible time trying to decide what one product to test out and review as they have so many unique and fantastic sounding things to pick from. I was eyeing the “premium beef” organic Italian Meatballs, but then noticed they have, wait for it… Cheddar Cheese, Potato and Broccoli Multigrain Pierogies.
But first, to find them. If you take a look at Life Choices Foods website you will see that they have a handy store locator. I checked the list and discovered that Life Choice Foods is carried at my local Zehrs. I want to mention this, because I had a hard time finding them and I want you guys to know where to look. My local store had them stashed away in the “health foods/organic section”. It fits, but it certainly wasn’t the first, or even third, place I thought to look.

One full bag of cooked pierogies. Yum. |
On to the pierogies! There are 18 in a bag. To make dinner for the entire family I would need to pick up two bags. They were $3.99 a piece, so two bags for one dinner would still be quite reasonable.
Check out this ingredients list: Enriched Flour, Multigrain Flour (Wheat, Spelt, Oats, Rye, Durum, Barley, Flax), Enriched Whole Wheat Flour, Water, Potatoes, Cheddar Cheese (Milk, Bacterial Culture, Enzymes, Beta-Carotene), Dehydrated Broccoli, Soy Oil, Onion, Salt, Spices. Isn’t that amazing? Nothing on there that I can’t pronounce, or don’t know what it is. Just all natural, good for you, stuff.
I shared a bag of these with my four year old daughter for lunch. They were good. I was a bit disappointed in that you couldn’t really taste the broccoli. I was hoping for more of a broccoli and cheddar taste. Instead these are sneaky pierogies full of silent veggies. My kids love broccoli, so I don’t need to find ways to sneak it into their diet. Still an extra serving of vegetables, particularly in a meal that normally consist mainly of starch and carbs, is always welcome.
These were quick and easy to make. The directions on the bag, which say boil for 8-9 minutes, were spot on. Right at the 8-9 minutes mark the pierogies were puffy looking, floating at the top of the pot, ready to come out.
G-Girl ate 4.5 and pronounced herself full. I over did it and ate 12. 10 probably would have done it, as these were a little larger then the pierogies that I normally serve. (Not that these are very big, just the homemade ones I’ve been buying from the local Ukrainian restaurant are quite small.) I had a hard time trying to figure out the label, which suggests that 120gs equals a serving, from out of a 1lb bag. How many pierogies is that??
Overall, I really enjoyed these and will definitely be picking them up again. I love the outer shell, made from Life Choices Foods unique multigrain and flax recipe. I love that Life Choices Foods has taken a classic comfort food like pierogies and make it into a healthy dinner choice! They really just taste like regular pierogies, only these are so much better for you. They also make two other flavours of multigrain pierogies; Cheddar Cheese and Potato and Cheddar Cheese, Potato and Soy Bacon. Take a look at their website to see all the fantastic healthy choices they offer.
