I am guessing I’m not the only one that hears fibre and immediately thinks about “bathroom regularity”. We all know fibre is supposed to help prevent constipation and keep you “going regularly”. And because I’ve never had problems with constipation, I am totally guilty of ignoring how much or how little fibre I’m getting in my diet. Recently I had a conversation with my mom about how I’ve been trying to lose weight, in an effort to just be generally more healthy overall, and she asked me about how much fibre I’m eating. I didn’t make the connection. Why ask how much fibre I’m eating? But my mom went on to explain how high-fibre foods can help with weight loss and also help lower cholesterol levels. Win/win! (And not just taking her word for it, I looked it up online and read a few articles on dietary fibre like this one from the Mayo Clinic.)
General Mills sent me this box of Fibre 1 Almond & Cluster Delight to try out and to be honest I figured I would end up giving it to my cereal devouring kids. The truth is, I am not a big cereal eater. When I do have cereal it’s usually dry as a snack. I enjoy oatmeal at breakfast, but I never actually find the time to make it (and yes, I’m talking about the instant just add hot water stuff). First thing in the morning is crazy, particularly on school days. So I really need a healthy breakfast choice that I can just grab and eat instantly. This has lead to me falling into some really bad “instant” breakfast habits (hello danish!). More and more often I’m skipping breakfast, or ironically enough eating something I would let my kids have for breakfast over my dead body.
Given what my mom had mentioned to me about needing more fibre in my diet, and in the interest of giving it a fair review, I decided to try out a bowl of Fibre 1 Almond & Cluster Delight. And guess what? I rather love it! For one thing I love knowing that I’ve already hit 40% of my daily fibre requirement, just in my breakfast bowl. And I love that this is a healthy instantaneous breakfast choice. It’s also pretty darn tasty; crunchy, almond, sweet but not too sweet. It doesn’t crumble up, and isn’t too messy to eat dry. It also leaves me feeling full until lunchtime. This now tops my list of regular every day breakfast choices. My only problem with it was that the kids like it too, so we went though the box at an alarming speed and ended up arguing over who got to finish it off.
