Blue Orange Games is an award winning toy company that makes fun environmentally responsible games for both kids and adults. We have several of their games in our house, and I’ve been consistently impressed with both the quality and the fun factor on their games. So I was quite happy to give Froggy Boogie a try.
Game Play
The concept behind the game is cute. It’s froggy nap time but the mischievous baby frogs just want to play. Players attempt to sneak their baby frog around the pond, and must freeze when an adult frog “looks” at them.
Play is simple, but fun. When it’s your turn, roll the two dice coloured dice. Then find an adult frog that matched the two colours you rolled. There are 9 dual-coloured adult frogs, one for each possible colour combination. Each adult frog has two removable eyes. One eye is blank and the other has the image of a baby frog on it. The trick is to only pick the blank eyes. That’s where the memory part of the game comes into play, as you try and remember which eyes are blank. If you pick an eye with a frog on it the baby was been caught and can’t hop that turn. The goal is to hop your baby frog, from one wooden lily pad to the next, all the way around the pond.
The game plays 2-6 players. The box says ages 4 and up, but my 3 year old was able to join in.
Game Components
From the moment I first opened the box I was impressed. The game pieces are lovely, high quality stuff. The game includes 6 baby frogs, 9 adult frogs, 18 eyes, 1 large water lily, 11 smaller water lilies and a pair of dice. Every piece is made of solid wood. The game pieces were packaged with an amazing attention to detail, with tissue sheets between the pieces so they wouldn’t get dinged or scratched up in transit.
My Thoughts
I initially thought this game would be too complex for the 3 year old to master, but I’m glad I let her give it a try. Both of my daughters loved playing this game. They also loved making up their own rules and playing creatively with the lovely solid wood pieces.
I will admit Froggy Boogie is slightly boring to play as an adult, but still more enjoyable then 99% of the big brand kids game I’ve tried. It’s also mercifully quick. I can gladly sit through a round or two of this, as it only runs 10-20 minutes per game.
Overall Froggy Boogie is an incredibly sturdy and well-crafted game, with a simple and enjoyable game mechanic which even the youngest of kids can pick up. It’s a great game for working on colour recognition and memory. I loved that my three year old didn’t have to sit out while we were playing this one, while the five year old still felt challenged.
Froggy Boogie retails for $29.99. The Blue Orange games website doesn’t ship to Canada, so your best bet is picking it up at Amazon.ca or your local gaming shop.
