We just finished reading The Sea Fairies by L. Frank Baum. It’s one of Baum’s non-Oz book. It’s also now one of my favourite children’s books ever. The descriptions of the mermaids and the underwater life were fantastic, and Zog the Magician was one of the most deliciously evil villains I’ve encountered in quite some time.
This book was a delight to read aloud and share with my little ones. I managed to find a gorgeous free digital version of The Sea Fairies, which includes all of the original illustrations and colour plates. (Or if you prefer dead tree books, it’s available in print at Amazon.ca).
If you’re a fan of the Oz books, or enjoy classic children’s literature, I heartily recommend checking this book out. For you Oz fans out there I should also mention that this book chronicles the previous adventures of Cap’n Bill and Trot, the main characters from The Scarecrow of Oz.
Had you heard of this hidden gem previously? Have you been following along on our reading adventure through Oz?
