With Star Wars day, a.k.a. May the Fourth, having been this past weekend my mind keeps wandering to all things Star Wars. If like me you find you have a sudden hankering to sit back and watch something “in a galaxy far far away….” Netflix has you covered. While you’ll need to dust off your DVDs if you want to watch the original Star Wars movies, Netflix has plenty beyond Episodes I through VI to keep you busy.
If you haven’t seen it yet I suggest you start with The Clone Wars movie and then follow that up with The Clone Wars series. This animated tale follows the story of Anakin Skywalker and his Master Obi-Wan during the Clone Wars, and fills in details of their adventures between Episode II and Episode III. This is not a watered down for kids version. It is every bit as engaging at the Star Wars motion pictures. There are continuing story arcs, reoccurring characters and some surprisingly dark themes as Anakin edges closer to the dark side. (The sixth season is available on Netflix and nowhere else.)
Next might I recommend Fanboys. This road trip nerd comedy pokes fun at both the Star Wars and the Star Trek obsessed. Watch for cameo appearances from both William Shatner and Carrie Fisher. It’s light-hearted, predictable, and at times laugh out loud funny.
And finally, I suggest checking out Jedi Junkies. This slice-of-life documentary takes itself seriously as it follows the escapades of some of the world’s most dedicated Star Wars fans. (For those that have seen it, I’d sum this up as a less humorous version of Trekkies.)
In related news my husband assures me today is also Star Wars Day, dark side style — Revenge of the Sixth.
