Cool Freebie Alert – Free Comic Book Day

May 6, 2011 by Deanna Tousignant 3 Comments

Saturday May 7th marks the ninth annual Free Comic Book Day! That’s right, comic book stores across North America will be giving out free comics on Saturday!

We are usually out of town around this time of year, as it also happens to be my wedding anniversary this weekend.  Over the years, I have had the chance to experience Free Comic Book Day in London, Toronto and Windsor.  As both my husband and I love comics, we make it part of our anniversary celebration to hunt down all of the nearby stores that are taking part. Each store sets their own policy on how many free comics you can get.  For some it’s one per person, and others let you grab five or ten a piece.  I’ve walked into shops that were giving away brown paper surprise bags full of free back issues. Most places have the sponsored free comics, which are provided by the comic publishers, laid out on a table for you to choose from. Along with the free comics many stores also have huge sales.  I’ve snagged back issues for 50-80% off, and graphic novels for 30-50% off. Pretty exciting stuff, if you’re into that sort of thing.

A Couple of This Years Offerings

Even if you’re not into comics yourself, this is a great event to bring your kids to. Comic books are a fantastic tool to help promote literacy. I would really say this is an all ages event.  Last year we were able to find several comics such as Owly (a cute wordless black and white comic designed for the younger crowd), and Fraggle Rock, which were relatively age appropriate to the then 2 year old G-Girl. Some stores have guest appearances by costumed characters to help in the celebration.  Others have comic book writers or artists on the scene for autographs.  You can search here to find a list of stores participating in your area.  Plan to go relatively early, as the free books do sometimes run out as the day goes on.

Have fun! Let me know if you go.
