I stood in the doorway chatting with my mom as she got ready to take my kids away for an overnight sleepover. She mentioned there was a new Netflix series she was going to show the girls. “I put it on to check and see if it would be appropriate for them…. and I ended up watching three episodes by myself.”, she said with a giggle in her voice. I was puzzled to know just exactly what kid’s show was so riveting that my sixty year old mom would get sucked into watching multiple episodes of it solo. The answer, as you can guess from the title of this post, was The Adventures of Puss in Boots.
The series follows the adventures of the Puss in Boots character from the DreamWorks Animation Shrek franchise. I like the Shrek movies, I like Puss, but I was still a bit leery about this show…. like I didn’t want to expect too much from it, you know? Spin off shows, particularly when aimed at kids, are often sub par at best. But this didn’t disappoint. The animation is top notch. The writing is clever. The humour is sophisticated enough that it appeals to adults as well as children, but with none of the double-entendres I dread having to explain.
The second episode revolves around a riddling Sphinx. It was my kids first introduction to riddles, and it was a concept that really stuck with my four year old. She’s started making up her own riddles, really surprisingly clever riddles, and I couldn’t fathom where she got the idea from until I went back and watched the show.
Basically the only down side I can see to this show is that thus far they’ve only released 5 episodes, and we mowed through those 5 episodes depressingly fast. At 22 minutes each the episodes are a bit on the short side. The upside is I’ve read that a total of 26 episodes were filmed, and more will be released in 5 episode blocks throughout the year. Yay. Something to look forward to.
Overall I’m seriously impressed with this series and would highly recommend it, both for those with young kids, and even perhaps for those without. If you’re a fan of Puss as a character, I think you’re going to enjoy this one!
What about you? Are you a fan of the Shrek movies? Have you had a chance to check out Puss in Boots yet? I’d love to know what you thought of it.
