Yesterday we had a special night out on the town, we took the girls to see Strawberry Shortcake Live: Follow Your Berry Own Beat, with special guest stars The Doodlebops.
Prior to the start of the show several of the characters came in a side door right into the theatre seating area and had a quick walk up and down the aisle and waved and yelled “Hello!” at the audience. That was a nice touch, and definitely had the kids excited.
The Doodlebops rocked. They put on a seriously high energy performance that had my kids dancing in their seats. I couldn’t help but admire the sheer physicality of their dance routines, and I mean something beyond merely decent choreography. They were jumping in the air, cartwheels, non-stop, holy cow where do you get that kind of energy from, performing. The stage settings where a little sparse, but then The Doodlebops were just the opening act. I have to say my girls and I would definitely love to see an entire full length Doodlebops live show.

The Strawberry Shortcake portion of the show was more visually appealing, the costumes were adorable. The storyline was so-so, it felt like there was a missing third act. After the show my five year old kept asking me, “But what happened when they went to the contest? Why didn’t they show the big Berry City?” (not that I wanted the show to be any longer, at an hour and a half total it was just right for preschooler attention spans). Overall, we didn’t enjoy this show as much as we did Max & Ruby in the Nutcracker Suite, but it was still a special night out for the kids and The Doodlebops were definitely the highlight of the evening.
Strawberry Shortcake Live is touring across Ontario in February and early March, and then the show moves into New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Check out the official website for tour dates and ticket info.
