There is definitely something to be said for the convenience of ordering a mattress online and having it show up at your house. Poof. Magic.
It arrived on our front porch in a box which was both somehow smaller and larger than I thought it would be. As I stood there eyeing it my 10 year old came up next to me,”Wow, that’s a big box.” she said. “It’s bigger than Gigi. Both of us could easily fit in there.” Big box. Really heavy too, I could barely push it off the porch and through the front door.
And yet… as big as that box was, it also felt like it was too small to actually hold a mattress.
Life happened. And the box sat unopened in my front room for several weeks. The kids started building Lego set-ups on the side of the carton.
“There’s an entire mattress in there?” My mom asked when she stopped by one afternoon. “Like is it a special small mattress or is it full sized?” I assured her that it was a full sized twin mattress and that, yes, I was going to get it set up in the girls’ room.
Eventually, with my husband’s help, I got the box up the stairs to my daughters’ second floor bedroom. Even with the box being as large and as heavy as it was, I felt like it was much easier to finagle up the stairs than a mattress would have been. (We’ve wrangled mattresses up this staircase before — this was still hard work, but if memory serves, way better than slugging a mattress up a flight of stairs, definitely easier to turn corners for one thing).
My 7 year old was excited about the prospect of a new bed. She was jump-up-and-down-dance-and-sing excited. She insisted on helping me unpack and unroll the mattress.
I was shocked by how quickly the mattress expanded once the vacuum sealed package was cut open. I cut into the plastic packaging, there was a whistling sound of air escaping and in the time it took me to count to ten the mattress more than doubled in size. My daughter squealed with glee and stared in fascination as the mattress appeared before our eyes. I wish I had taken a video. I didn’t expect it to expand so quickly. It was neat to see.
Putting Our New Douglas Mattress Through The Nap Test
After letting my daughter take her mattress on its maiden voyage to dreamland, I had to give it a spin. I climbed into her lower bunk bed and sprawled out on the new bed. It was super comfortable. Even after being buried in approximately thirty stuffed dolls and picture books, and having two kids clamber all over me.
One of the big things I noticed was that even with three of us on the mattress, there was no noticeable dip. With two kids climbing on top of me I was expecting to sink into the mattress, but I didn’t. Everything was firm and cozy. While no actual napping took place, this thing passed the nap test with flying colours.
Does it really stay cool?
The second floor of our house gets pretty warm and stuffy in the summers, and my girl is pretty sensitive about it. The number one complaint that has my 7 year old hopping back out of bed to bug mom between the hours of 8pm and midnight is, “I’m too hot.” I’m pretty certain if sleeping on this mattress made her feel warm or sweaty she would have told me by now. Repeatedly.
CoolSense Mattress Cover + Cooling Gel Foam Layer =’s A Cooler Night’s Sleep
The Douglas mattress website claims that the combination of Douglas’ natural eucalyptus fabric CoolSense mattress cover and the ecoLight cooling gel foam layer which absorbs more heat with faster dissipation, will give you a cooler sleep. I’ve laid on her bed a handful of times, for extended periods, and I’ve noticed the spot where I’m laying doesn’t heat up like it does on the spring and coil pillow top mattress I have in my room.
Is it comfortable?
My 7 year old assures me that her new bed is the most comfortable thing EVER.
Having laid on it myself I have to say, I am seriously impressed. I find myself wanting to sneak into her room and sleep on her bed. It is SO DARN COZY. When we replace our queen sized mattress, I think I know where it’s coming from.
How Canadian is this thing?
It’s so Canadian that it smells like maple syrup and comes with a free box of Tim Bits. Ha. No. I’m joking.
But the Douglas mattress is 100% Canadian. Their website touts about how proudly Canadian they are. The mattress is designed, photographed, manufactured, delivered, and warrantied by Canadians in Canada. They use Canadian-sourced materials, Canadian-sourced renewable energy, and are crafted entirely by Canadians in Canadian factories. That’s pretty darn Canadian, eh?
Thinking of getting your own Douglas Bed?

Douglas Free Mattress Competition
Disclosure: I was given a Douglas mattress to try out. As always my words and opinions are my own.
I am having an issue with the entries. ..it does not shoe up that I entered with Facebook or have visited their Facebook site….now maybe I am doing it incorrectly but it shows on their Facebook site that I liked their page….
Sounds like a great Canadian made product. Great to hear about. Thank you for the chance to win!
Sorry that you’re having trouble with your entries, Cathy. Maybe try a different browser? This is my first time using Gleam for a giveaway, so I’m not super familiar with how it works. (And yes, super cool Canadian made product. I was excited to be able to share this one with you guys.)
Amazing giveaway! 🙂 Not sure if a couple of the form options were set up correctly though. Enter using Facebook took me to the same page as Visit Douglas Bed on Facebook option, When I clicked on the Enter using Instagram option it completed itself (done) and the Sign up for our newsletter option completed itself as well with no sign up for newsletter link… Just wanted to let you know. 🙂 I know you mentioned above that this is your first time using Gleam.
One more thing lol The link that shows up in my tweet from the Twitter option goes to the Douglas Bed website and not to your post here.
