The Guilt Trip is the story of one man’s cross-country road trip with his mother. The mom is played by screen legend Barbra Streisand and comic master Seth Rogen plays her son. I was sent a pre-release copy and asked to sit down and watch it with my own mom and then write about the experience.
What followed was an almost comic like ballet of conflicting schedules where we found ourselves unable to find a time when we were both free to sit together and watch a movie, that would also line up with a time when another adult was free to watch my kids. Feeling like I was engaged in my own real life Guilt Trip with my mom, I did what any good kid would do, I called in a pinch hitter. I sent the flick over to her house and my mom and my younger sister sat and watched it and then called me to tell me how “hilarious” and “not too sappy” it was.
Actually my mom called me as soon as they opened the package, because she thought the Mother’s Day card with the pre-recorded message from Barbra Streisand was a hoot. She insisted on playing it for me over the phone. Multiple times. (The Target exclusive version came wrapped to gift give to your mom, complete with card.)
The following day I got the full review from each of them. My 30 year old sister said, “It was very genuine and funny and both mom and I enjoyed it. It was a great movie to sit and watch with your mom.”
I cornered my mom on the phone and her first response was “I enjoyed it…. … I thoroughly enjoyed it.” When I said, “Come on mom I need a bit more then that to go on.”, she replied with, “It was realistic, funny and heartfelt but not too corny or schmaltzy. It actually reminded me of things that have happened. It was a great movie to sit and watch with your mom. (and {ahem} when exactly are you planning on doing that?)” Right. Point taken.
