"When your room looks kind of weird and you wish that you weren't there, just close your eyes and make believe and you can be anywhere." Here's my little sister playing with her gifts on Christmas morning, circa 1985 -- complete with baby Big Bird and Muppet Baby Kermit. Anyone else remember the Muppet Baby theme song? Um, no, just me? I really loved that Saturday morning … [Read more...]
Do You Remember Glo-Bugs? You know, the 1980s toy?
I found this old booklet from 1987 that came with the GLO Friends and thought it would be fun to scan and share. Do you remember these guys? My kid sister had them by the dozen. My best memory is of the one time during a sleeping over when I took the frosted glass fishbowl style kitchen light fixture down and filled it with as many GLO Bugs as would fit. End result? … [Read more...]
A Boy Named Bimbo
A few weekends back I was sitting in my driveway eyeing crates full of old kids books, waiting for customers who weren't showing up during one very slow moving yard sale. To help pass the time I started flipping through books, and inside a 1950-something copy of Uncle Arthur's Bedtime Stories I found this gem. "You horrid Bimbo!" I'm guessing sixty some … [Read more...]
My Little Pony, 1980s Style
My kid sister playing with her My Little Pony toys in around 1986 or so. Her baby ponies were hanging out at The Baby Bonnet School of Dance and the My Little Pony Lullabye Nursery (and if you look closely you'll see a couple of Glo-Bugs joining in the fun). Personally, I was never big on My Little Pony. I remember getting Apple Jack as a birthday gift when I was in Grade … [Read more...]
This THING Makes Music??
Last week I dusted off my old Fisher Price Record Player, which I've had since I was 5 years old, maybe longer. I dug through the record collection (yes, I still have a record collection) and pulled out such childhood gems as Disco Mickey Mouse and The World of Strawberry Shortcake and spent the afternoon listening to LPs with my 4 year old. I've got to say, that Fisher … [Read more...]
Holly Hobbie, Take Me Home
Me and my Holly Hobbie playhouse, circa 1977. For something made out of cardboard this thing was pretty darn sturdy. For several years it served as play space and doubled as the spot where I dumped all of my stuffed animals. When we moved, around 1980, my parents tried to take it apart and then reassemble it, but they "couldn't put Humpty together again". I remember that … [Read more...]
You Never Forget Your First Love
My kid sister with our T1-99/4A. While our Texas Instruments computer was technically not a toy, I spent so many hours of my childhood playing around on this thing that I think it qualifies for my Retro Toybox theme. It took cartridges, like Nintendo style cartridges, that held games such as Alpiner (climb the mountain while dodging snakes, cougars, giant egg laying … [Read more...]
My Little Pony, from my 1980s childhood
My kid sister circa 1986-ish, proudly showing off her My Little Pony playset with newborn twins Jangles and Tangles. While My Little Pony wasn't a personal favourite, in my childhood memories they are strewn across the bedroom floor my sister and I shared. … [Read more...]
Little People Merry Go Round, circa 1970s
This Fisher Price Little People Merry Go Round was made from 1972 to 1977. It has a wind up music box which plays "The Skaters Waltz" as the Little People turn in circle, riding upon various animal seats, and the cranky looking fellow in the cap pumps his arms around turning the crank. I'm a sucker for the old style Fisher Price Little People. They were some of my … [Read more...]
