So I’ve been seeing these strange looking bugs for the past few weeks now. They are quite large, with bodies as big as the width of the palm of my hand. The fact that they were so large, and that I didn’t remember ever seeing a bug like that before had me a bit weirded out.
A few days ago I happened to have my camera on my and snapped a picture of this fellow, who I think was dead and drying up on the sidewalk. I wanted to snap a picture so I could go home and look it up online and compare. I wondered if it was a locust, or some other bug that only shows up every so many years (and yes, after poking around online I now remember locusts look more like grasshoppers).
Thanks to the magic of the internets, mystery solved. I figured out that this is a Cicada, a bug which only appears above ground every 13 or 17 years.
Have you noticed them around this year? Were you creeped out like I was , or did you recognize them right away?
