How many times in a day does clean water touch your family’s life? How many times in a week? In two weeks?
As Canadians, we have a seemingly unlimited supply of clean water, so it’s no wonder that we often take it for granted. I know I’ve been guilty of it myself. Brushing our teeth, watering the plants, doing the laundry, having a tall cool glass of water on a hot day. All of that clean water readily and easily available whenever I turn on the tap. It’s an invisible part of our lives, one I rarely stop to think about. Yet approximately one billion people in the developing world do not have the same luxury. Every day diseases from contaminated water are killing more children every day than malaria and HIV/AIDS combined (Source: World Health Organization).
I want to dwell on this a bit. I’d like to be a little more aware, and not take clean water for granted. Perhaps even focus a bit more on water conservation, a hot topic for debate between hubby and I (to leave that tap on when you brush, or not?). So to help focus on how lucky I as a Canadian am to have constant ready access to clean water, I am going to take part in P&G’s #cleanwater photo challenge.
You’re invited to take part too! (And there’s a prize up for grabs!)
From July 18 through 31, P&G and Walmart invite you to share photos of the role clean water plays in your life. Follow the #CleanWater challenge calendar and post a photo inspired by the word of the day. The photo can be of clean water or of the impact the water has in your life and the lives of those around you. (eg. Day 1: Thirst, could be a satisfied smile and wipe of the mouth after gulping clean water from a glass or a photo of a happy child after a dip in the lake). You can post the photo to whatever social sharing platform is your favourite, Twitter, Instagram or Facebook, but be sure to include both the #CleanWater hashtag and the daily hashtag (eg for Day 1 it would be #Thirst) in the text accompanying your photo.
One lucky Canadian who takes part by posting photos during the challenge will randomly be chosen to receive both a P&G prize pack and a $250 Walmart giftcard.
How P&G is helping; the P&G and Walmart Clean Drinking Water Program
The P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program helps provide clean drinking water to people in need through a special water purifying technology developed by P&G. To date, more than seven billion litres of clean drinking water have been provided by humanitarian organizations across the globe using this P&G technology, helping to save an estimated 39,000 lives in more than 75 countries.
Back in April P&G teamed up with Walmart to donate one day of clean drinking water for every P&G product purchased at Walmart. In that one month 8.6 million days worth of clean water were donated. But that’s not enough. The program goal is to donate 25 million litres of water over a 12 month period.
Right now, P&G is donating a day’s worth of clean drinking water for each P&G product purchased at Walmart (from now through July 31st). Then for the remainder of the program (through March 31st 2015) P&G will donate one day of clean drinking water each time select products are purchased at Walmart.
Disclosure: I am a P&Gmom. As part of my affiliation with this group, I have been offered compensation to participate in the #cleanwater photo challenge. The views, opinions and photographs expressed on this blog and in my social networks are my own.
